Aerospace Engineering:

Established in 1964, the aerospace engineering department is among the leading departments for research and education in aerospace engineering comprising the core specializations of aerodynamics, flight mechanics, propulsion, and aerospace structures. Over the years, the department has engaged with a large number of organizations including NAL, GTRE, HAL, DRDL, ADE, ARDE, ADA, ADRDE, ISRO, IAF, USAF, BARC, Boeing, Pratt and Whitney, Airbus and GE for scientific and engineering research.

The department seeks applications from dynamic and motivated candidates with excellent academic record along with specialization in the any of the following domains:

 

(1) Aerodynamics stream: – Aeroacoustics; Aerodynamics of bio-inspired vehicles; Fluid-structure interactions (FSI), computational FSI; High-fidelity computational aerodynamics simulation for low/high-speed flow regimes; Testing and instrumentation for low/high-speed flows.

(2) Aerospace propulsion stream: – Turbomachinery: experimental methods, full-scale computations, and flutter; Electric propulsion; Novel propulsion systems for drones and space applications; Solid propellants.

(3) Aerospace structures stream: – Dynamics and vibrations of flexible structures; Aeroelasticity: experimental and computational methods; Experimental solid mechanics; Design of aerospace vehicle structures (including vehicles for space exploration); Structures for spacecraft and satellite applications; Structural integrity and health monitoring.

(4) Flight dynamics and controls stream : – Flight dynamics of aircraft (fixed, rotary and flapping wings), coupled computational aeromechanics and control; Satellite and spacecraft dynamics; Flight vehicle guidance and control.

(5) Other areas: – Artificial intelligence for design, aerodynamics, flight control, fluid-structure interactions; Stealth technologies, Coupled aero-structure-EM computations; scientific machine learning surrogates and digital twins for aerospace applications; Novel sensors for aerospace and space applications; Unmanned aerial vehicle technology (design, integration, guidance & control, and their applications); Next-generation materials and manufacturing processes for aerospace applications; High energy material/energetics for aerospace applications; Internal aerodynamics; Multi-disciplinary design optimization (MDO); Designs for futuristic flight vehicles; Green/Sustainable aviation; Avionics and aerospace systems, Integrated vehicle health management.

Biological Sciences and Bioengineering:

Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE) is a multi-disciplinary department addressing both basic and applied areas of Life Sciences and Bioengineering. Research in BSBE is focused on: regenerative medicine (stem cell biology, tissue engineering, drug delivery, biomedical device); understanding protein structure-function relationship (structural and computational biology); engineering approaches to understanding biological systems (biomechanics, image processing, electrophysiology, computational modeling), cellular, molecular, developmental, and neuro-biology addressing fundamental aspects of cell differentiation and growth; disease models - animal models for human diseases.

Applicants must have a strong track record of conducting cutting-edge research in any of the above areas with expertise in one or more of the following aspects i.e. design, modelling, analysis and development of materials and devices, processes and systems (for example, thermal and electrochemical systems), electrical/electronics/control engineering, integration of large/deployment scale systems, energy economics and energy policy. The preferred candidates must hold a PhD degree with an excellent academic record throughout and should preferably possess an undergraduate degree in an appropriate area of engineering.

Candidates with an excellent track record in any other exciting futuristic areas of Energy Sustainability that are not listed above may also be considered.

Materials Science Programme:

Thrust Areas:

Physical chemistry: Synthesis and characterization of novel materials, surfaces and interfacial phenomena; Nanomaterials: Synthesis, properties and applications such as sensors and catalysis; Energy : Inorganic and organic materials and devices including solar cells/batteries/ fuel cells; Materials: Mechanical behaviour and modeling, structural ceramics and composites; Multifunctional materials : Spintronics, multiferroics; Functional polymers: Properties and applications such as targeted drug delivery; Biomaterials: Tissue engineering, bone substitute materials, biosensors, lab on a chip, etc.

Note- Outstanding candidates having expertise in other emerging areas in materials science and engineering will also receive due consideration.
