Kanpur, November 27, 2022: The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur celebrated the Constitution Day with great enthusiasm on campus on November 26, 2022. Institute Director Prof. Abhay Karandikar graced as the Chief Guest, while Deputy Director Prof. S. Ganesh was present as the Guest of Honour. Mr. Manish Paliwal, Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court, New Delhi; and Mr. Rohan Gupta, Advocate of Allahabad High Court, were present as Distinguished Guests for the occasion. The dignitaries were felicitated with mementoes at the start of the event.

The Constitution Day was emphasized with the reading of the Preamble of the Constitution of India. Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director IIT Kanpur led the recitation of the Preamble in Hindi, followed by an English recitation by IIT Kanpur’s Deputy Director, Prof. S. Ganesh. The essence of the Preamble was echoed by all the participants including faculty members, officers, staff, and the students, in unison.

Being present as a Distinguished Guest, Mr. Manish Paliwal, Advocate-on-Record, Supreme Court, New Delhi, apprised about the significance of the Constitution and the Preamble. He drew parallel to the working and significance of the Constitution with the present technology-driven society.

Mr. Rohan Gupta, Advocate of Allahabad High Court, tendered his opinion about the importance of data privacy, and answered the questions asked by the participants regarding the working of the Constitution. With reference to data privacy in today’s fast-changing world, he shared insights on the right to privacy with relevant references. He also discussed the idea of nation, and reservation system with specific reference to the EWS category.

Mr. Prakalpa Sharma, Assistant Registrar (Legal), IIT Kanpur, drew upon the insights shared by the invited dignitaries and made conclusive remarks on the legal queries. He shared insights on the review petition with regards to the EWS category of reservation, and shed some light on the legal system with reference to Government of India Act 1935. Mr. Sharma also talked about the constitutional progress in terms of democracy and judicial pronouncement, and the generic notion of India as the ‘Mother of Democracy’.

The Constitution Day program at IIT Kanpur was organized by the institute’s Legal Cell team comprising Mr. Mohammad Naushad, Junior Superintendent; Mr. Ganesh, Junior Assistant; and Mr. Jagdish Prasad, Senior Technical Superintendent under the supervision of Mr. Prakalpa Sharma, Head of Legal Cell, IIT Kanpur.
