  • The five-day program will run until August 25, 2023

  • The primary objective of the training program is to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the latest concepts and developments in Smart Distribution Systems and Storage.

Kanpur, August 22, 2023: A comprehensive training program on "Smart Distribution System and Storage" has commenced at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK). The five-day course aims to equip industry professionals from key organizations such as Kanpur Electricity Supply Company Ltd (KESCo), Damodar Valley Corporation, Central Electricity Authority (CEA), REC, Central Power Research Institute (CPRI), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL), and other organizations, with advanced knowledge about integrating smart distribution systems with the electrical grid.

The course is being coordinated by Prof. Ankush Sharma from the Electrical Engineering Department of IIT Kanpur and Dr. Mahendra Singh from National Power Training Institute (NPTI) Faridabad. The training program seeks to address the evolving challenges in the power sector, and will run until August 25, 2023.

Mr. Samuel Paul N., Managing Director of KESCo was the chief guest for the inaugural event. It was graced by other dignitaries including Dr. Tripta Thakur, Director General of NPTI; Prof. S. Ganesh, Deputy Director of IIT Kanpur; Prof. Tarun Gupta, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur; and Prof. S. C. Srivastava, Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IITK.

The primary objective of the training program is to provide participants from diverse backgrounds, including utilities, academic institutions, research and development organizations, and industries, with an in-depth understanding of the latest concepts and developments in Smart Distribution Systems and Storage. The program aims to highlight the critical role of modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure in enhancing the monitoring and control of power systems.

As the power sector embraces Smart Grid Technologies at an increasing pace, there arises a pressing need for real-time visualization, monitoring, and control of the power grid. The proliferation of renewables, energy storage solutions, EV charging stations, microgrids, intelligent sensors, automation, and smart metering at various levels within the network necessitates the adoption of cyber-secure Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) tools.

Furthermore, the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources poses challenges related to system stability and power quality, which require effective compensation and controls. This training program will delve into these intricate challenges, fostering insightful discussions and providing practical insights for participants.
