Requirement of M.Tech Programme after admission
It is a 22-month program and divided into four full semesters in addition to a summer semester. The students will be allocated their thesis guide(s) based on their research interest and department policy in first semester after entering the program and can start working on their research topic leading to the M. Tech. thesis. Generally, the students need to complete their course work in the first year. The students will be allotted TA duty during their M. Tech program. The student will be provided with financial assistantship as per guidelines. Midway through the program, students may apply for switch-over to the PhD programme, subject to meeting necessary academic requirements (refer to clause 4.6 of the PG Manual).
After the implementation of new PGARC in 2023-2024 SEM I, the requirement of courses and other academic matters for graduation has modified. The requirements for graduation in old and new PGARC are provided below:
(A) Requirement for M. Tech program from 2023-2024 SEM I
1) Minimum credit requirement for graduation: 144. In this, minimum credit through course work is 72 and minimum credit through Research is 72 (Annexure B of Addendum/modification to PG manual).
2) Minimum duration: 4 semesters (excluding summer semesters); Maximum duration: 4 years (5 years for part time or external). Visit Annexure B of Addendum/modification to PG manual.
3) "Normal" semester load: For regular students, the normal semester load is 36 Credits (1 Course - 9 credits; 1 Thesis - 9 credits) except in summer term (18 credits). For more details, visit clauses 4.3 and 4.4 of PG manual.
4) *Course requirements (Addendum to clause 7.1 and Annexure B of Addendum/modification to PG manual):
(a) Minimum number of courses with credits: 8 (9 credit each). In addition, seminar course (MSE 801 with S/X grade) is compulsory before graduation
(b) Out of the 8 courses, 4 compulsory full credit courses are to be taken by the student:
- Fall Semester (Aug - Nov): MSE 615 (Structure and Characterization of Materials) & MSE 626 (Transport Phenomena)
- Spring Semester (Jan - April): MSE 616 (Thermodynamics of Materials) & MSE 617 (Mathematical and Computational Methods)
(c) Remaining 4 full credit courses (two courses in each of the first two semesters) will be chosen by the student to fulfil the minimum course credit requirement.
(d) English proficiency test by English Language Cell to be cleared by students in the first academic year.
5) To continue in the M. Tech program, students must have a minimum CPI and obtained minimum satisfactory thesis grades. For academic performance requirement refer Annexure C of Addendum/modification to PG manual.
(B) Requirement for M. Tech program before 2023-2024 SEM I
1) Minimum credit requirement for graduation: 144 (Clause 7.1 of PG manual). In this, minimum credit through course work is 72 and minimum credit through Research is 72
2) Minimum duration: 4 semesters (excluding summer semesters); Maximum duration: 4 years (5 years for part time or external) (Clause 7.1 of PG manual).
3) "Normal" semester load: For regular students, the normal semester load is 36 Credits (1 Course - 9 credits; 1 Thesis - 9 credits) except in summer term (18 credits). For more details, visit clauses 4.3 and 4.4 of PG manual.
4) *Course requirements (Clause 7 of PG manual):
(a) Minimum number of courses with credits: 8 (9 credit each). In addition, two seminar courses (MSE 690A and MSE691A, with S/X grades) are compulsory before graduation. MSE690A is prerequisite for MSE691A
(b) Out of the 8 courses, 4 compulsory full credit courses are to be taken by the student:
- Fall Semester (Aug - Nov): MSE 615 (Structure and Characterization of Materials) & MSE 626 (Transport Phenomena)
- Spring Semester (Jan - April): MSE 616 (Thermodynamics of Materials) & MSE 617 (Mathematical and Computational Methods)
(c) Remaining 4 full credit courses (two courses in each of the first two semesters) will be chosen by the student to fulfil the minimum course credit requirement.
