We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Sheo Shankar Rai joined our department on 02 August 2024 as a Professor of Practice. Dr Sheo Shankar Rai holds a Mining degree from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, a PGDM from Paris School of Mines, France (Mines ParisTech), and a PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad. Dr Rai brings over two and a half decades high-quality industry experience of the mining and metal sector across the mining and metal value chain, complemented by 8 years in academia and research.
Dr Rai has led multidisciplinary teams of engineers, environmental scientists, and social scientists to minimize the negative environmental and social impacts of mining operations while maximizing long-term economic benefits. His efforts have included optimal resource utilization (land, water, and energy), reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, air and water pollution control, waste management, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement.
Dr Rai has consistently showcased exceptional expertise in managing mining businesses, designing sustainable plans, overseeing complex mining and processing operations, employing cutting-edge technology to maximize efficiency, implementing sustainable practices to minimize environmental and social impacts, and engaging with the government for regulatory clearances and policy making.
Dr Rai has actively participated in policy making for the Environmental Clearances of Coal and Thermal power projects, developed strategies for critical minerals to meet sustainable development goals, and contributed to creating a mining readiness index to promote ease of doing business in the country.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Soumyabrata Roy joined our department on 14 May 2024 as an Assistant Professor. Prior to this, he served as a research scientist from 2022 to 2024 and as a postdoctoral research fellow from 2019 to 2022, working with Prof. P. M. Ajayan at the Department of Materials Science and Nanoengineering, Rice University, Houston. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Science from Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, and has a strong academic background with a Master's from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Presidency College, Calcutta, India. His current research focuses on developing advanced functional materials and multiscale processes for catalyzing sustainable chemical transformations, energy conversion & storage, and carbon capture & utilization through fundamental understanding of reaction engineering and structure-activity correlations. Also, he is a recipient of the Inspire Fellowship from DST-Govt. of India, RSC Commonwealth Grants, Indo-German DAAD fellowship, and Future faculty fellowship from Rice University.

He brings a wealth of experience in the energy and sustainability sectors. Mr. Arunavo led the climate change group at Tata Sons Pvt Ltd, achieving industry-leading positions and implementing impactful strategies. He also led the clean technology advisory business at Tata Cleantech Capital Ltd, securing assignments from marquee clients globally. He actively participated in international movements like the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI) and the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC). With extensive experience across the energy and infrastructure industry, from coal plants to renewables, Arunavo's dedication to sustainability and his contributions to shaping global climate change policies make him a valuable addition to our department. Mr. Arunavo's is a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and an MBA from the Carlson School of Management, with further executive education in sustainability from the University of Cambridge.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Srinivas Karthik Yadavalli joined our department on 13 March 2024 as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Yadavalli completed his postdoctoral training in Mechanical engineering at University of Michigan. Before this, he obtained his PhD in Engineering (Materials) from Brown University in 2021 and his Dual Degree (B-Tech and M-Tech) in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from IIT Madras in 2016. His research interests are in materials and process development for energy manufacturing and materials recycling. He has expertise in microstructure development, thermomechanical processing, mechanics, packaging, optoelectronics, solar cell fabrication and batteries.

The partnership aims to set an example for other institutions by creating a scalable model that aligns with India's vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2070. As a knowledge partner, IIT Kanpur will suggest eco-friendly practices, help reduce carbon emissions, and pursue renewable energy options. We are pleased to inform you that Mr. Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi has joined our Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering and Kesavan Center as a Visiting Professor of practice. Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi was a member of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) for more than thirty-five years before his retirement in October 2022. During his career in the IAS, he held positions in a diverse range of areas. His work in the erstwhile Planning Commission from 2004 to 2008, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) from 2008 to 2014, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) at Washington DC from 2014 to 2017 inter-alia pertained to design and implementation of economic policies. For the last about five and half years of his career, he worked in areas pertaining to sustainability- as Additional Chief Secretary, Forest and Environment, Government of Jharkhand from 2017 to 2020 and Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India from 2020 to 2022. The notable work done during his tenure in MNRE included design of two Production Linked Incentive schemes for solar manufacturing and the development of the Green Hydrogen Mission.
He is currently also working as Director General, Electric Power Transmission Association (EPTA), an association of electric transmission companies undertaking advocacy for the transmission sector. He current interests include issues related to the energy transition and the environment. He is also interested in the design features that make public policies economically sound, administratively implementable and politically feasible.
Indu Shekhar holds a B.Tech. degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT-Kanpur and a Master in Public Administration in International Development (MPAID) degree from Kennedy School, Harvard University, USA.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has developed a mobile laboratory equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. This innovative lab is capable of identifying pollution factors within a span of two days, a process that would traditionally take up to two years. This advancement is a significant component of the Advanced Technologies for Monitoring Air Quality Indicators Number (ATMAN) project. Two mobile labs are currently being prepared, and they will be deployed in major cities for a duration of one year. These labs will be systematically rotated across industrial, commercial, residential, and quiet areas such as hospitals and schools. Utilizing cutting-edge sensors, the labs will swiftly and accurately analyze pollution data with the assistance of AI. The resulting reports will be shared with the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board, the Rural Development Department, and Municipal Corporations in various cities. We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Amarendra Edpuganti has recently joined our department (on 28 December 2022) as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Amarendra Edpuganti received the B.Tech. degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal, in 2007, the M.Tech degree in electrical engineering from the IIT Kanpur in 2012, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the National University of Singapore, in 2016. He was a Software Engineer with Adobe Systems Inc., Bangalore, from August 2007 to December 2009. He worked as an R&D Engineer with the Grid Systems R&D, ABB Global Industries and Services Pvt Ltd., Chennai, from October 2015 to July 2018. He worked initially as a Postdoctoral Fellow and later as a Research Scientist with the Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, UAE from July 2018 to December 2022. His research interests include power electronics applications in transportation electrification, and renewable energy integration.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Sudarshan Narayanan has recently joined our department (on 14 November 2022) as an Assistant Professor. After graduating with a B.Tech in Engineering Physics from IIT Madras in 2009, he obtained his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh PA, USA in 2014. Following this, he was an R&D Engineer in the Vacuum Coatings group of Vitro Architectural Glass (formerly PPG Glass) in Pittsburgh, PA USA from 2014-2019. In 2020, he joined University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Materials. His primary research interests include thin film coatings, transparent conductors, optoelectronic devices, solid state batteries, and advanced materials characterization.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Rajeev Jindal has recently joined our department (on 01 July 2022) as a Professor of Practice. Dr Rajeev Jindal did his Ph.D. in Physics from IIT Delhi in 1998. After his PhD he was a postdoctoral fellow at Universite de Nice, France and Mississippi State University, USA. Subsequently, he joined industry and server various industries like Moser Baer, NTL, C&S Electric in the field of optical data storage, solar photovoltaics, LED lighting etc in the capacity of R&D manager and business management. He has been actively involved in product development research all along and has rolled out multiple products converting lab-based ideas to commercial products.

Dr. Rai received his B.Tech. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and Purdue University, respectively. Before joining our department, Dr. Rai held positions in Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), General Electric (GE), University of Surrey, and Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS-Pilani). He is a recipient of prestigious national and international awards, including the ASHRAE Grant-in-Aid award, BITS OPERA award, and early career research award. His research is focused on improving the energy efficiency and air quality in the built environment.

IIT Kanpur is the lead institute in ICMAP on Materials with Prof. Kanwar Nalwa of Sustainable Energy Engineering as Center Head. In the other two MAPs, Prof. Anandh Subramaniam and Prof. Jayant Singh are PIs in ICMAP on Bioenergy and Hydrogen, led by IIT Hyderabad while Prof. Sri Sivakumar and Prof. Raj Pala are PIs in ICMAP on Storage, led by IISER Thiruvananthapuram.

Dr. Chandra received Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany (now KIT Germany). Subsequently, during 2006-2022, he was associated with IGCAR Kalpakkam India, INP Grenoble France, NRG Petten The Netherlands, IIT Jodhpur and IIT (BHU) Varanasi. He specializes in fluid flow and heat transfer, and in particular a) bubble dynamics, b) experiment and computation, c) dust transport and deposition, d) solar thermal sub-system design, and e) turbulence modelling.

Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering (Dr. K. S. Nalwa) organizer and Chandrakanta Kesavan Center for Energy Policy and Climate Solutions are co-organizing the UK-India SUNRISE symposium on "Transition to NetZero" on 10-11 February 2022, to be held on virtual platform.
The symposium will showcase technology development sessions on food, water, energy and Net Zero. Food, water and energy together makes the foundation for socio-economic development and well-being, but also significantly contributetowards global warming and climate change, which raises the concern of environmental and ecological sustainability. Food-Water-Energy-Climate Nexus with transition towards Net Zero will be an effective way to deal with these complicated issues, which would require an interplay of technological interventions, and dedicated efforts of multiple stakeholders including academicians, researchers, industries and decision makers in this direction. SUNRISE symposium will explore the linkages between water and hygiene, energy harvesting, energy systems, food production and food security in the context of decarbonisation and Net zero through global collaboration of leading research teams and industries. Dr. Deepika Swami has done her Masters in Energy and Environmental Management and PhD in Climate Studies from IIT Bombay. She has also worked as a research scientist in multiple projects related to Climate and Sustainability, Climate change and livelihood, Regional energy management, climate change acquisition and knowledge dissemination sponsored by National Communications to UNFCCC (NATCOM), Department of Science and Technology, European Union-IUC and The Akshaya Patra Foundation. Berkner fellowship from American Geophysical Union was one of the prestigious awards given to her for her work on need of decentralization of Climate policy for India. She has also contributed as an author for Rajasthan State Action Plan on Climate Change. Her broad area of interest is in Energy Policy and Climate Changes.

We are pleased to inform you that Dr. Lalit Pant has recently joined our department (on Dec. 07, 2021) as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Lalit Pant has done his B.Tech. in mechanical engineering from IIT Delhi (India) in 2009. He obtained his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from University of Alberta (Canada) in 2016. His research is focused on understanding electrochemical energy conversion devices, such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) and batteries using multi-scale and multi-physics simulation models. He has developed novel modeling approaches for studying the effect of micro-kinetics, porous media structure, and degradation modes on device performance. He also specializes in using x-ray tomography to investigate micro-scale phenomena in porous media. His broad area of interest is in Electrochemical energy conversion and storage, numerical modelling, porous media transport.
